Why Life Feels So Overwhelming Right Now And How To Gently Slow It Down

Sometimes mornings feel heavy before they even begin. You know that feeling. Before your feet even hit the floor, you have all the to-dos running through your mind. Or that incident that happened yesterday that is still weighing heavy on you.

Nothing is technically wrong. But it all just feels like too much. If you’ve been feeling that way lately, you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not doing life wrong. You’re just living in a pace your nervous system was never meant to keep up with.

Most women I talk to aren’t lazy or unmotivated. They’re overloaded. Not just with tasks, but with constant input. All the notifications, decisions and Lord knows all the constant mental tabs open.

Somewhere along the way, life stopped feeling like something you’re living and started feeling like something you’re managing. And when you stay in that mode long enough, your body doesn’t get a chance to reset. That’s when everything starts to feel heavier than it should.

Slowing down doesn’t mean doing nothing. And it definitely doesn’t mean changing your whole life. It means creating small pockets of space inside your current life, so you can actually notice it again. It means shifting out of autopilot and back into awareness. Not all at once. Just a little at a time.

Where to start (without overwhelming yourself more).”

You don’t need a full reset. You don’t need a new routine. You just need one place to begin. Here are a few simple ways to gently slow things down:

First, start with what you’re actually feeling. Before you change anything, pause and notice:

What feels like too much right now?
Where do you feel stretched thin?

Most the time we skip this step and go straight to fixing.

Next, change how your day begins. If your day starts with your phone, your brain is immediately in reaction mode. Try giving yourself even 10 minutes before you check anything. Open the curtains, sit with your coffee, and breathe for a second. It’s a small shift, but it changes the tone of your entire day.

You can also clear one small space. Not your whole house, just one area. A kitchen counter, a corner of a room or even your nightstand. When your environment feels calmer, your mind follows.

You can also try creating one boundary with technology. You don’t have to disappear from your phone. But you also don’t need to be available all the time. Pick one pocket of your day be it, dinner, an hour before bed or your morning and make it phone-free. Guaranteed, you’ll start feeling present again just by this one act.

This next one is my own favorite…step outside (even for a few minutes) You don’t need a full routine or a long walk. Just step outside, breathe and let your body catch up to you. Fresh air, sunlight, even a few quiet minutes can help regulate your nervous system more than you think.

Think about how and what you are consuming all day long. What I mean is, notice how you’re eating, what you’re buying, and what you’re taking in all day long. Even pay attention what you watch on tv or listen to in your car. This isn’t about restriction. It’s about awareness. When you slow down and become aware, things start to feel simpler.

Recognize that rest is not something you earn after everything is done. Let rest count! Rest is something your body needs in order to function well. Even a few minutes of doing nothing matters more than you think.

“You don’t need to do all of this.

This is where some people can get stuck. They read something like this, feel inspired… and then try to change everything at once. And then nothing changes. So instead, try this:

Look at your life and ask, “Where does this feel the loudest right now?”

Start there.

One small shift is enough.
