How Self Discovery Is Your Best Friend When You Feel Lost

Have you ever hit a point in your life where you suddenly question everything? Things like who am I, am I fulfilling my purpose and why does it feel like I’m reliving the same year over and over? If you are nodding your head up and down as if you thought you were alone in feeling this way, trust me, you are not.

This has been me, on more than one occasion. Turns out, what instigates these kinds of questions is when something big or drastic happens in our lives. For me, it was divorce. For you it could be a job loss, experiencing an accident, losing a loved one, missing a major opportunity, having a mental health crisis, birthing a child, being an empty nester or having something ripped away that you weren’t prepared to lose.

It feels like a knowing that we are made for more and there is a strong desire for a major shift to occur. But, it can be so frustrating because it is like you are being thrown in the forest to find your way out without a compass….you feel lost. Which direction do you go?

I feel like we get so caught up in being everything for everyone else and giving our all to our careers that in the mix, we’ve forgotten about the one who needs to be prioritized. The one who is doing all the giving will run into depletion if she doesn’t ever get a chance to refill. That person is YOU. This big and drastic change is like a wake up call. At least it was for me. Because when you already feel like you’ve had the rug pulled out from you, it can stir up a lot of other traumas and emotions that you have been shoving down. It’s like our bodies and Spirit is saying, “Okay, it’s time to do the work”. Meaning, it’s time to release what no longer serves you, prioritize yourself and be the person you were meant to be.

That’s when I DOVE into self discovery, personal development and metaphysics. I was discovering why I had some of the behaviors and beliefs I had, that forgiveness is the key to healing and how everything is connected. It all was AMAZING to me! It was like putting a huge puzzle together. I was so fascinated that I went on to become a certified life coach focusing on intuition and energy.

Journaling was where all these puzzle pieces were coming together. It has played probably the leading role, aside from my oracle, tarot and self discovery prompt cards. After every entry was an ah-ha moment and a lot of those entries involved lots of tears. NO SHAME! If there is one tip I can give you, is to lean into every emotion you experience. Don’t stop the tears, don’t stop the anger or sadness. FEEL IT AND LET THEM FLOW OUT OF YOU. That is your body’s way of releasing.

I would love to share with you some of my favorite journal prompts for you to start your own journey. When I say favorite it’s not because they’re all sunshine and rainbows. I say favorite because they are where the biggest breakthroughs come from. You don’t need a special journal or notebook. If all you have is a napkin, go after it! All that matters is that you’ve begun. And trust me, if you make this a daily ritual, you will be blown away 30 days, 60 days, a year from now, at how much lighter you feel. The clarity you will receive and the feeling of being so much more connected to yourself will be enough for you to not want to ever stop.

  1. What childhood memory sticks out to you the most? Who was there, what happened…describe in detail what happened. Describe how it made you feel. After done writing, go back and reflect on those details, who, what and where and tie those to the feelings you felt. If happiness, you may feel an immense amount of gratitude while reflecting. Feel free to write out all that you’re grateful for, even the people. If it’s sadness or anger and tears are flowing, let them. You could write out how you’re feeling as if you’re writing them a letter telling them. You won’t send it of course, but writing it out will subconsciously serve as a release.
  2. What compliments do you usually receive? How do you respond? What are your first thoughts when someone gives you a compliment? If negative, where do those come from?
  3. What is that thing that you want to do but don’t feel confident about? What steps are you taking to achieve that confidence?

Those are some juicy, can be deep ones, but I also like to have fun with self discovery too! That’s why I created a self discovery journal prompt card deck. Where you can pick a card out of the deck randomly and use what it says to CREATE self discovery. I say CREATE because I mixed things in there like creating affirmations from negative thought patterns, word finds and what they mean to you, writing yourself a love letter and so much more! For your own deck, click HERE and I’ll get one sent out to you!

I hope this opens your eyes to a whole new world of self discovery. It gets the stigma of being a daunting task but it doesn’t have to be. And in my experience, if you don’t do the inner work, those suppressed emotions will show up in our bodies in many different ways and even in what you experience in life. There will more about that in future posts. So much knowledge in this brain, I could go on forever, but it’s time for you to go and start unveiling your own self discovery journey!
